SEDNA'S STORY
CANADA'S FIRST INDIGENOUS AWARD-WINNING ANIMATED MUSICAL FEATURE FILM
Jerry Thevenet | Canada | 85 mins | 2022 | Canadian Premiere | 9+ ( 5+ with Parental Supervision)
In EnglishSedna, Empress of the Sea (1 x 85’) was inspired by a story that Indigenous writer/director/producer Jerry Thevenet's grandmother told him as a young boy. The film reimagines one of the most compelling Indigenous legends of all time, weaving it into a modern tale loosely inspired by the original.
A courageous young Inuit girl, Sedna, is kidnapped by an evil raven and held captive on a treacherous island. Escaping by kayak, she falls into the frigid arctic waters whereupon she magically transforms into a mermaid-like goddess (Empress of the Sea). The beautifully animated feature is a light-hearted, action-adventure musical that uses comedy, metaphors and allegory to introduce children to the concept of residential schools and their impact on Indigenous people.
